In Portugal, a growing area of over 300,000 hectares is (in terms of area, the fourth largest in the world) edited, which gives an annual production from 4.5 to 10 million hectoliters. Approximately 15% of the working population of Portugal live from wine. The annual wine consumption is 55 liters per capita and is thus lower than in French and Italians (the first place among the wine-drinking countries with 130 liters per capita consumption since lost). There are today in Portugal five viticulture zones with over 40 quality wine-growing regions, including 26 with DOC status.
